Cement is the major component in concrete, which contributes to the strength of the concrete. Generally, cement is stored in warehouse for some period. Sometimes, the user purchases the cement in bulk and stores at the site. Cement is a moisture-sensitive material.. The quality of cement changes depending upon the storage conditions such as temperature, relative humidity etc. When stored in contact with damp air or moisture, Portland cement will set more slowly and has less strength than Portland cement that is kept dry. Experimental results conducted at various locations in India are compiled to evaluate the deterioration in quality of the cement due to aging. Study of probable major causes was made and suggested proactive measures for minimizing the extent of deterioration.
Clinker, which is an intermediate product, is produced on a very large scale. Clinker produced is stored in silos or in covered gantry or sometimes even in open space. Clinker when exposed to harsh environmental conditions deteriorates in quality. Study of the effect of weathering on quality of clinker was done by simulating site-conditions. Experimental results are discussed and the need for proper storage condition is undoubtedly brought out.The paper was presented and published at 8th NCB Int. Seminar
