USE OF FLY ASH AND SLAGS AS CORRECTIVE MATERIALS IN CEMENT MANUFACTURE – ILLUSTRATIVE CASE STUDIES

Rapid industrial development  has  initiated a serious ecological and environmental imbalance due to dumping of industrial wastes. In tune with the global emphasis on waste utilisation for greener and cleaner environment . At the authors labs  investigative studies were carried out ,  on potential use of the common industrial wastes in the country in cement manufacture .The  industrial wastes such as  fly ash from coal fired Thermal plants and L.D convertor slag   , from steel industry can be beneficially used as correctives in cement manufacture through judicious raw mix studies .

The paper discusses the chemico-mineralogical characteristics of these industrial wastes along with the reactivity of the cement  raw mixes with and without the use of these wastes as correctives .The quality of the resultant clinker and cement has also been discussed in some details .Studies carried out at the authors indicate that  usage of these wastes could  substantially enhance the reactivity of cement Raw Mix and lead to improved  phase formation in clinker .

The paper illustrates  through illustrative case studies,  the benefits derived from the usage of these materials at the plant scale.
