The Cement Industry in India mainly uses coal as a fuel. India has coal resources of about 110 billion tons. At the present rate of mining the resources are adequate for about 700 years to come.
Coal is a combustible solid, usually originated from accumulation and burial of partial!y decomposed vegetation in the previous geological ages , which has got altered to coal by the biological changes brought about by the prevailing high temperature and pressures under the fossilized condition. Thus coal by its very nature is non-uniform and highly variable material.
Clinker manufacture is a process with certain limits on tolerable variations in its process parameters, therefore the significance of coal in pyro processing of clinker is of paramount importance in achieving quality of clinker & cement.
This paper covers the significance of coal characteristics and its influence on pyro processing behavior in cement rotary kiln, it further attempts to highlight the effect of deteriorating quality of coal on raw Mix design and on clinker/ Cement quality
